and when she speaks

Wednesday, March 02, 2011

Last week, I had to interview at a place about 45 minutes away from the city of Chicago.

I could have cabbed it the entire way, but... I had earlier brought it up with one of my closest work friends, Safdar- who casually said 'I'll drive you there'. The biggest smile lit up on my face, because it was so thoughtful and so sweet of him to offer.
It's friends with big hearts like that that make you feel there really are angels placed in this earth for the sole purpose of being there for us. I asked him again 'Are you sure?'. He looked nonchalant, 'Yeah why not?' but it turns out he was on call that morning- (although that was possibly the nicest gesture a friend can do without expecting anything in return!)

I was expecting to take a cab there, because I couldn't think of anyone else who could drive me there on a Friday morning (a work day) at 7am. But I was really lucky. And am still :)

I told another friend Gabriel, who also generously offered! I never asked- because I HATE asking for help! But he offered 'I'll drive you there' - and my heart skipped a happy beat. So I was driven there- and I had company whilst I was reading up on my research papers in the car on the way to the interview spot :) We had breakfast even! It's so nice of him to wake up so early, rent a car and help me out. I am so grateful.. :)

I was lost, because I had gone into the wrong part of the hospital, and had to walk 2-3 blocks outside to get to the right building. I was slightly late for Grand Rounds, but nevertheless plonked my butt down in one of the back seat rows. Next thing I knew, another physician sat down beside me.

At the end of the talk, he introduced himself 'You're Sueyi, right?'
I smiled, slightly taken aback--- then, studied his face for a split second, and my smile widened.
"Yes, I am. You're my third interviewer'- I recognised his face from the website.

WE talked for a bit, and I couldn't help but feel so genuinely welcomed by him, the Program Director of the hospital I interviewed at. I left the hospital that day, feeling on cloud nine. Everyone - everyone was amazingly wonderful, friendly, hospitable and warm. I was extremely happy by the end of the interview. And I had made up my mind to rank it in the top three :)

On another note, cardiology was a super fun rotation. I had two amazing attendings. The first one had a huge heart of gold, he always took his time with the patients no matter how long rounds took and he was so nice to us- and the second was funny, humorous, candid and a great teacher. My team was also a fun group, I couldnt have asked for a better rotation, coming back from my vacation! My fellow also took his time teaching, for which I really appreciate. I had a tonne of fun! Now, it's time to plan for that night out with the cardiology team to celebrate being done with that rotation! :) (a reason to go out and have fun! heheh)
