and when she speaks

I know I've been on a long hiatus - it's been a long while since I've written anything at all and I feel like I've abandoned my poor blog :(
So it's time to get workin' ;)
I've done my ICU rotation where I only averaged 5 or less hour sleep daily... and the nights before my call; for some reason, I could never really fall asleep. I am not sure if it was the stress and the uncertainty that will bade the next day come call time *lol* Don't get me wrong; I learnt so much and had a great group of co-residents in the unit. The people I was surrounded by were all amazingly brilliant people- all very competent; and I had very dedicated attendings (bosses) too. The camaraderie was strong; and we were a tight group; who'd help each other out. I enjoyed it in the whole but I think I'll stick to a subspecialty that has less acuity and urgency when it comes to dealing with people's lives. *heh*
Honestly; when a patient's live is on the line and they're actively crashing, your decisions are key to whether that patient will make it through the night or not. In the Intensive Care Unit; when you're on call; really-what you want to achieve is keeping that patient stable, alive and breathing til the next morning- and that alone in itself can be a highly challenging task, not to mention extremely stressful and overwhelming when you're in that moment faced with a rapidly crashing patient!
When I moved onto my next rotation which I'm currently on right now; everything seemed so much more relaxed. The pace is way less hectic, and you feel like you can manage anything that they come in with- because these patients are stable.
You literally feel like you can handle anything when you've just transitioned from the Intensive Care Unit- you're much more confident with the patients you have and you've been so trained to look at every single minute detail of their medical care; that you become so thorough and so efficient. It feels pretty good.
We celebrated the end of our ICU unit in sync with Roselyn's birthday at West End bar and it was great seeing everyone again- after being isolated in the ICU *lol* --- You finally see and interact with humans - *lol; Im exaggerating* ;)
Housemates and I threw a potluck and it was a huge success :) I made stuffed peppers with chorizo, black beans, rice topped with melted cheese *mmm*
It was a hit with my friends. Not that I'm boasting, but it was well-received *heh*
It felt so good the other day, when I could see the difference I made in one of my patients in my own clinic. She lost 10 lbs in one month; and that was a month filled with temptations with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New year all around that time---yet, she resisted them and persisted with hard-willed determination to shed the unheathy fat off. And no she didn't starve- she did it healthily. She started a food diet and joined the gym. She was eating healthy and exercising. And when she came back the next visit, I told her I was so impressed and proud of her, you could see the joy in her eyes- she almost cried. She said 'Thanks doctor- you don't know how happy I am to hear how proud you are of me. I'm so motivated right now, I'm going to go work out later today'...
Ill admit. *heh* She puts my own eating habits to shame.
Ok-SueSue it's time to stop the carbs (my bagel habit is slowly killing me!)
and munch on more proteins, veggies and fruits!
I'm HEADING HOME next week. It's going to be fantastic fun! I'm so looking forward to spending time at home and resting up. Of course, I already expect a little-rested vacation back at home cos I'm positive my dear mummy has tonnes of activities lined up for me and tonnes of visitors for me to go say HI too .. LOL
I cant complain though. LOL ;)
Lots of love
SueSue
