and when she speaks

Thursday, April 08, 2010

Mummy was so cute- she called me up early in the morning when I was about to round with my team on our patients.

She was so loud through my phone that my friends overheard and laughed :)

Dear ol' mummy!

I'm having my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow and I'm nervous. And reluctant to go, although the pain's been getting so bad til I cant sleep and the headaches from the referred area come almost daily now.

I told mum I wish I were home, so she could take care of me...
I know- Im an old brinjal already...Acting like a big baby.

Nothing beats the love and warmth from your mum and dad.

Mum would accompany me to the dentist at home when I was younger. (I hate visiting the dentist more than anything- I have a track record when I was much younger of screaming and running out from the dentist's chair :( .. )

She'd come inside the dentist's room with me, and wait with me.
She'd just be by my side... a comforting, reassuring, loving being.
And then, at home, she'd make me hot soup.

I'd whine about the pain for awhile- and I know, she doesn't mind it too much. WELL- I take that back. She'll tell me to stop whining, pinch my butt and my whines fall on deaf ears sometimes (lol!) But that also means shes listening! :)

She's just always there.
When we have fevers, she'd sponge us, check on us every so often, make us yummy chicken porridge and break her sleep cycle just to make sure we pop our Tylenols on time to beat the fever :)

I used to lie in bed all crunched up, curled in a ball from having severe menstrual cramps. I had always avoided taking pain pills- so I'd just lie there in agony, drenched in sweat for hours, just suffering, and withstanding the ongoing contraction knots within... til I fall asleep from fatigue.
And she'd make me my favourite hot ginger tea :) And the pain goes away in an hour or two :) - it's her remedy and it works damn well! :)

Mummy, I love you.

Ah.

Chai tea was my saviour the other day. Sitting on my own with my hot cuppa in a cosy little cafe downtown, after my leisurely plonk at the park for about an hour just to de-stress- was exactly what I needed. Being warped up happily in my own zone, lost in my own world- away from everyone and the hectic outside ongoings... I was able to relax, let go and be free.

Free from worries, calm and serene.

I gave myself a treat. Time for myself. To reflect. To read. To absorb. And feel content and appreciate all that I have around me.

Just me, in the solitude and comfort of that warm little cafe; with my hot cup of chai tea infused with sweet cinnamon aroma and my papers to read. It did wonders for my soul.

This weekend was a blast. I caught up with a long time old friend just talking at the park. Strolling against the warm breeze of wind in the evening by my own, snapping photos, and enjoying the city with its dazzling night lights surrounding me.
Observing two friends doing charity work in Chinatown, sharing two hours of their Saturday morning teaching the elderly how to read and converse in English.
Running in the rain (unintentionally) to meet up with long time seniors (from University of Chicago and another Peds fellow from Milwaukee who came down for a day trip) at Phoenix for dim sum! Had tau fo fa too ;)
Eating yummy Korean BBQ chicken and bi bim bap! And driving down to Gilson Park to enjoy the sunny Saturday afternoon by the beach; watching dogs run into the lake; fooling around. Lazing on the lush green grass soakin up the sun rays.
Watching the BIG musical hit Billy ELLIOT which received raving reviews from NY Times and Chicago Times :)
Ah- it was a fulfilling weekend.

Now it's time to pick up my pen and read.
Back to General Medicine Floors on Tuesday and back to being on call for 30 hours!!
